I watched last night's SNL made from quarantine, and it was, uneven at best, but that's what made it so good. It's a unique moment right now where artists/musicians/entertainers are letting themselves be raw and vulnerable and imperfect, fumbling through new ways to make art. /1
It's all been wonderful to experience and take part in, because it reinforces how important the arts are to our daily lives, and how valuable they can be in making people feel connected. Seeing creatives adapt imperfectly from their kitchens makes us all feel in it together. /2
I hope when we look back on this very strange time we never again take the arts for granted. Entertainment has been getting everyone through this, and creative people everywhere have been stepping up to unique challenges, to give us something to connect to. /3
I also hope, after watching all these raw quarantine broadcasts, that everyone in Hollywood has a whole new respect for sound, camera, hair/makeup, and lighting crews, and makes sure they're well taken care of through this. /4
It is striking (although not unsurprising) how differently the arts/entertainment world, with community experiences and raw humble quarantine broadcasts, comes across vs the cold, selfish, and wholly discomforting daily narcissism rallies of POTUS. /5
45 has every quality of a person we don't need right now, and none of the qualities we do need. We're a rudderless ship lost at sea, so thanks to all the creative people of the world for keeping the music playing on the deck. Fuck our "leaders," we'll save ourselves -- together.
Tonight’s ep of @LastWeekTonight was a masterpiece of quarantine art. At once a vital, sobering piece of journalism & a much-needed bit of joyful rat porn comedy. Maybe the best example yet of how much the arts are rising invaluably to the occasion. Well done @iamjohnoliver & co
