Earlier today a friend (a Kent County Councillor) kindly praised my work in the community during the crisis. This attracted a comment from someone who has never met me. "Is this being paid for from the £10,000 extra for office expenses?"

When I pointed out sharply that councillors have not received any such money and he should check the accuracy of facts before posting, I was told "it was only a question". The reality is, we all know it was no such thing. It was virtue signalling based on a false premise.

When asked to correct or delete his post he refused. "I have done nothing to apologise for. It was only a question." I wonder if I posted on a public forum... "I wonder if ( @insertname) is beating his wife” how he would feel?

Especially if when the error was pointed out and I was asked to withdraw, I said "no, I wasn't making an accusation, I was simply asking a question. I have done nothing to apologise for!"

This crap has got to stop. People justify their behaviour because "we need better people in public life". But those who undermine without evidence then refuse to withdraw when proved wrong are part of the problem, they are not the solution.

Yes, we need more and better people, but the angry mob, indignation by proxy, factual inaccuracy and arrogant and self-righteous inability to admit error are some on the reasons good people refuse to enter public life. And that is a tragedy.
