I am so puzzled by how widespread the idea that people are not going to be immune to #COVID19 after recovery is. Is immunity complicated? Of course. Is there any reason to expect, this outcome? No. Seems wildly improbable to me. Thoughts @VirusesImmunity @russellevance? https://twitter.com/amy_harmon/status/1249030729956294658
That's not to say there are no worries about immunity. Serology tests are imperfect, with false positives that lead people to behave as if they're immune particularly problematic. There are also legitimate concerns about antibody mediated enhancement, especially around vaccines.
And there are important things to determine, like what the timecourse of immunity after infection is (although we have decent expectations based on other viruses) and how long the immunity will last. And the virus will ultimately mutate to evade immune surveillance.
But this should be all thought about in the context of an expectation that this virus will behave like virtually all viruses that infect large numbers of people do, and will leave in its wake people a population of people who have developed immunity.
