Many years ago, I spent months and months reporting a story for Washingtonian about a promising college senior who committed suicide.

I spent a lot of time with his mother and there's something she told me I'll never forget.

We were talking about what her loss had taught her.
She said, "You learn that the only thing that matters is who you love."

I've thought about it so many times over the years but never more so than in the last month, as virtually everything we thought mattered has been stripped away.

The only thing that matters is who you love.
I was reminded of that reading this very insightful piece.

This passage? Wow.
I thought of this this morning as I waded through some hateful messages.

People are suffering and dying all around us. Someone I know is fighting to live in the ICU right this very moment.

Maybe it's time to think about what we're putting out into the world. Think hard.
The only thing that matters is who you love.
I don't pretend I haven't been guilty of adding to the negativity at times. But if this calamity doesn't force you to slow down and take stock, I don't know what will.

The only thing that matters is who you love.
