Hi there programming librarians now doing virtual programming. Please choose programming that uses as few supplies that are typically around the house as possible to be inclusive as possible. Connectivity is already on access hurdle, so let’s add as few others as possible.
Remember, Legos are expensive and virtual LEGO clubs are another hurdle. Maker supplies, art supplies, cooking supplies are all access hurdles to consider.

As in all programming, diversify so you are including as many people as possible.
Ask yourself who this serves and how. Ask yourself what the hurdles to access are. Ask yourself if you have a wide enough variety of virtual programs to be as inclusive and equitable as possible.
Don’t get me wrong, in person programming is going to be a bad idea for a while. Even when stay at home orders are eased, big groups will still be a bad idea and most parents will be weary of large crowds and for good reason.
We’ve pivoted our services in good ways. It’s been challenging but rewarding. But it definitely has some built in access issues from the ground up. Let’s acknowledge that and make intentional and meaningful decisions that take reality into consideration.
I don’t know what summer will mean for libraries and summer reading. But I think large groups are still realistically not going to be a good idea. Even if allowed, as a parent I personally would still tell my kids no. People are going to have a lot of fear. Justifiably.
I think make and take, grab and go kits that you don’t return are good things to consider when restrictions are lessened. I think virtual programming will still be a thing for a while. I’m no expert, but I keep seeing that this year will require a lot of caution moving forward.
And that’s only after scientists say it is safe to do so.

I do think people will need and look to their libraries for help, for comfort, for community. It’s what we do and will continue to do. I think that they are even now.
