5 tips for starting running.

One of my most asked questions, a RT would be really cool.

No particular order.

I must stress, I’m no expert, I was in a dark void weighing 18 stone and wanted out.

I went from a 6 hour marathon to 3:10 in under 2 years.

Here’s where I started.
1:

Buy some proper running shoes, don’t skimp out, buy something with a good cushion that’ll protect your feet, they will be your most important asset.

@HOKAONEONE is a great place to start, Rincon, Mach 2 etc
2:

Run easy. By that I mean run at a pace which you can talk to yourself without breathing heavy. Running is one of the only forms of exercise that’ll push everything you own. The harder you run, the more it’ll hurt and the less you’ll enjoy it, to start with!
3:

Start short. I started with 10 minutes out, a break, then 10 minutes back, it was just over a mile, yes, I was that ‘slow’ - eventually over time it got easier, and I got more confident. If you’re scared of being in public, use a quiet lane, country park etc
4:

Don’t diet. By that, I mean don’t change EVERYTHING in one go, it’s emotionally too much. I tried so many times to start and gave up, eventually I just focussed on running, and eating less crisps/chips, the weight started to drop off, eventually!
5:

Start today. Don’t wait for Monday, or the 1st, start now. Keep expectations low, and just get out there, no matter how short or slow it is to start. If you can make consistency and pain your best friends, lots and lots will change.
And finally, download @Strava! It’s great for routes, tracking your runs like a diary, cross networking with others and seeing your progress. But remember, not every run has to ‘look cool’ by that, I mean be fast, long or impressive to others. It’s your journey.
