I was v surprised to see @NYCMayor’s communications director suggesting that there’s no value to 3-4 weeks of school (if we could get it).
This contradicts what I hear from educators everywhere.
Maybe we can explain to these non-educators how valuable those weeks would be.

At the top of the list: assessment.
It would greatly benefit next year’s efforts to get a June read on where kids are before summer break.
Have learning gains occurred in distance learning? learning losses? for which students?
This way, smart summer planning can occur.

This morning, @MicheleCaracapp, former @SuccessCharters teacher and CAO, has been reflecting on the planning needs for next year in a FAB THREAD.
She talks about using Spring data... with an implicit assumption that this is the best data Ed’s can get.

. @MicheleCaracapp’s thread emphasizes the need to start intervention for kids who need it from day 1.
Co-sign!
That can be delivered MUCH more effectively if we can get a June read on which kids need that support. The answer will not 100% align to March data. Full stop.

A June read on the degree of learning gain/loss would also greatly empower another critical aspect of summer planning: curriculum shifts.
Same point as above: Ed’s can work from days rather than assumptions with a measure of how kids end this year.

The unit compression work that @MicheleCaracapp describes is HARD. Educators already struggle to fit it all in during a year.
It will be challenging if Eds can get June benchmark data on student progress. Without it, the task is that much more difficult.

Shifting gears (I’ll come back to instruction)...
It would be HUGELY valuable for kids socially and emotionally to get a slice of normalcy before the year ends.
The biggest benefit to my 8YO of distance learning has probably been the reconnection with teacher & classmates.

Last weekend, when @DOEChancellor announced an immediate end to Zoom use, parents (incl myself) across our school set up parent-led class meetings while the school worked on shifting to a new platform.
That’s how much we worry about SEL impacts of kids not seeing each other.

Here’s a recent tweet that captures how much it has meant to our kids to be connected virtually.
But what it really shows how hard this shift has been on kids.
A slice of normalcy before summer would be huge for NYC schoolkids.

NYC schoolchildren have had the most disrupted experiences.
Many have seen loss.
All have heard the ambulance sirens, and the applause for healthcare workers at 7pm.
My daughter Googled “Does coronavirus kill kids?” early in the pandemic.
Our kids are going thru a lot.

Our kids don’t have backyards. Playgrounds are closed.
They’re cooped up in the tiniest avg homes in the US, with all this going on around them.
If we ONLY reopen schools to give them 3-4 weeks of normalcy, that would be reason enough. Per @dshapMENTOR.

Back to instruction:
In districts that still hope to reopen, T’s are planning packages they can send home with S’s for the summer.
Book bundles and other learning resources. Especially for kids w/o home libraries.

If schools open for 1 week, NYC can follow suit.

Plenty of other benefits to 3-4 weeks of reopening that @WileyNorvell @NYCMayor @DOEChancellor ought to understand – but may not, based on these comments.
The 3 reasons above are a compelling start & warrant reflection before hasty decisions are made.
