this is spot on and i'm sorry. https://twitter.com/leavem3alone/status/1249250924792393728
i definitely misapplied the term homonationalism, and that's a disservice to the BIPOC LGBTQ+ people who created it. i'm sorry.
my intent was not to assert that labeling yourself in terms of your identity is inherently bad, especially if you're closeted. but intent and impact are different things! so i apologize.
my intent was to question why we conceive of something like lesbianism as a space that can be "invaded" by, e.g., bisexuals when we know that same rhetoric is frequently used to target sapphic trans women. but, again, intent is not impact!
and yes, i am white and i acknowledge my whiteness is a big reason why i have the platform i do. i apologize for being irresponsible and insensitive with it. https://twitter.com/leavem3alone/status/1249354816008015872
i do believe in anti-imperialist politics but i'm obviously very bad at them, so i'm grateful to everyone who articulated what i got wrong, especially the BIPOC ppl who don't owe me this education. i'm also sorry for being dismissive earlier before i read more of the critiques.
this is a crystal clear explanation of how i columbused my way into misapplying "homonationalism" as a term. again, my apologies. https://twitter.com/devilhornsdyke/status/1249364967846969344
and here's a smart, succinct breakdown of everything i got wrong in my bad tweet. https://twitter.com/celebikai/status/1249271089206829056
it is probably obvious that, for me, twitter is real life. one of the many ways this is true is in the potential for political discussion on here. i am always grateful for good-faith criticism and will take this, in part, as a lesson in speaking less and listening more.
