Here’s a stab at the things we should be planning NOW so we’re ready when students return to elementary school. Note that this list is academically focused, and not inclusive of all the supports kids and Ts will need upon return. 1/
1. Gather assessment data from the spring pre-closure, AND administer diagnostics when students return; use data to inform intervention and supports from day 1 (do not wait to intervene to address gaps) 2/
2. Adjust curricular scope and sequence to build in time for March - June content; compact existing units and focus on most impt content for the grade so you can still achieve year-end goals. 3/
3. Plan schedule strategically so that intervention blocks happen outside core instructional block (bonus if you can add time before or after school to provide even more time beyond regular school day). All students should still get core instruction. 4/
4. Make strategic staffing decisions — consider having teachers in particular grades loop with students, or find addtl ways to get strongest Ts working with most vulnerable kids. 5/
5. Make reading instruction a school-wide priority. Invest ALL Ts in the reading success of all students. Teach all Ts how to diagnose and address reading needs - reinforce across all content areas. 6/
Following up on that last one — diff schools will have diff needs, but I’d anticipate putting a lot of attention on Gr2, given that you’ll have more kids who need addtl phonics support given disruption to Gr1. Would plan on making strategic schedule changes and staffing moves. 7/
What do you think? What would you revise or add to this list? 8/8
