hey this is your regular PSA that "fujoshi" and "BL" are not negative terms. the former means a fan of m/m pairings, the latter is a genre for m/m romance. that's it.
do not misgender male and nb fans with "fujoshi". the "joshi" part means WOMAN. male fans are "fudanshi", the non-gendered term is "fujin". don't look at someone's profile, see their gender, then continue to use the wrong gendered term.
if you've had bad experiences with fans of BL who also disrespect gay men; welcome to the club! our bad experiences do not mean every female fan of m/m is homophobic. there are an especially large amount of lgbt women who are fans
also, as much as it sucks to see the homophobia and disrespect, our culture is unfortunately steeped in it. a lot of times, young people who are still coming into their own might carry those prejudices with them when they interact with lgbt pairings. that doesn't mean that you
should excuse it, but ask yourself how old those disrespectful fans were. a lot of the "worst" fujoshi grow out of that behavior, and might even figure out they're lgbt themselves
there's a reason people have called rebranding terms like "fujoshi" and "BL" as negative things racist, sexist and colonizing, and that's because it's /non-japanese-people redefining a benign term made for and by japanese women/
and while I've seen it describing non-japanese media and fans of said media, it's overwhelmingly for and about anime, manga and japanese games. so basically, everyone who's a fan of m/m pairings for those things is bad. there's... a clear problem there
and yes, there is unfortunately misogyny in the fujoshi community, especially among younger fans. I've seen it a lot less in recent years, but when women grow up in a sexist environment and focus on the relationships between men, they might turn those prejudices towards the
female characters who "get in the way" of their ship. this is a symptom of our culture, NOT a fujoshi-exclusive thing
I only wish it was fujoshi-exclusive
I only wish it was fujoshi-exclusive
(an easy way to tell it's not fujoshi-exclusive is: the sexism from younger m/f pairing fans. they can be just as vile towards any female characters who "get in the way" of that)
it's been weird to see the negatively towards fujoshi change from mostly from men to from men AND women who have decided they're evil fetishizers. if "fujoshi" is only for the Bad m/m fans, you're redefining a term that doesn't belong to you. if you think women should only
be fans of pairings with women in them, I............. don't know what to say to you. that's kind of weird and fucked up???
anyway. ending this thread with, I'm a bi woman who is mainly into yuri. m/m pairings aren't usually what I focus on because I'm not as interested in stories that focus primarily on men. that's just my personal taste. but sometimes, a m/m pairing or story will get me invested
because at the end of the day, they're stories about people. and everybody loves stories about people. getting mad at women because they like stories about two men is misguided at best
(sometimes it can be more than two at the same time however)
