Something I have really struggled to find good answers to since starting a pseudo urban planning degree is how to secure the political support necessary to build and maintain community spaces without those improvements driving gentrification and displacement
Like how do we get leaders to get on board with funding genuinely public spaces, instead of “public” actually just targeting the athleasure class?
Especially with the ramping up of policing in the pandemic, it is going to be a real struggle to promote public spaces that are accessible to marginalized folks who states want to invasively surveil
I have a big worry that the condition under which public spaces get funded (by governments or by private interest) in the future is on the condition that someone can profit from behavioural data or use it to further control poor folks
