personal take on #MassPromotionNow

yung boss ko - isa sa leading figures ng data science and AI dito sa pinas pati sa New York, nagmi meeting kami one time tapos nung nalaman nya na graduating na ko, sabi nya, "wag mo na tapusin" wahahahaha

/1
this coming from a person na hindi w/in STEM yung degree and di rin nagwork sa tech pero doon sya nag end up thru self study, ojt, etc yung mga nagta trabaho for his AI company, hindi rin mga graduate ng comsci or engg pero sobrang naging magagaling thru self study rin
/2
also, before ako nagstart mag work, naka attend na rin ako ng review for board exam. ang nangyari lang talaga doon sa "best review center" kuno, it wasn't about assessing how well u understood the engg concepts, etc but how well u familiarize the board exam questions. /3
the reason why it was the "best" review center in terms of passing rate is bc they engage in something illegal - they pay takers to take photo of the exam questions then send it to them para may materials sila sa classes. /4
so as long as isubsob mo ulo mo doon sa materials, okay ka na. Lalo na maraming ring errors ung exam at ung mga nakakita ng typical errors sa exam ang makakaalam kung alin ang most likely correct answer (na mali talaga, if based on actual computation) /5
so if may nag iisip man na "hala baka kailangan yang subject na yan sa board exam", I think kahit 2nd year ka palang sa eee (taga UPD ako btw), kaya mo na sagutan ung questions sa review materials /6
also, I remember na nung 3rd year palang ako sa internship dati sa isang dist. utility, bilang isang normal na nilalang na hindi laude standing o whatnot, yung mga kasama ko from other schools na mas senior sa akin, behind sila compared to the lessons na na-take ko na. /7
Nung ibinigay na samin yung project, wala silang ma contribute kasi ni-isa dun sa terms hindi familiar sa kanila. Quizzers itong mga kagrupo kong ito, as in best of the best sa school & region nila. In other words, sobrang ahead ng curriculum ng eeei /8
so wag kang masyado kabahan, kahit pa mag mass promote, advanced pa rin yan /9
anyway, what I'm trying to say is, kung ang problema nila ay kesyo technical yung subjects, uhm, bilang isang empleyado sa highly technical field, pumasok ako dito na 80% nung ginagawa, di ko pa alam or na-try before. Yung 20% na alam ko, malabnaw pa hahaha /10
hindi rin tinuro sa classroom or whatnot. Pero naka cope naman. Ang pinaka naitulong sakin nung University is just allowing me to explore the ways of thinking. And trained me to be self correcting. /11
Meaning, kahit anong new concept that I need to learn, I can because I have been trained of all the ways I can think of something. Kahit sa thesis namin, wala kaming ginawa na tinuro sa class. Lahat ng ginawa namin we had to learn from scratch. /12
In my professional and academic experience, it's always been about " oh ayan, there's a need, and here are the ways we can solve this" and then while solving the problem, natutunan ko na yung new concepts and skills along the way /13
in summary, if hindi pa na-instill yung "ways of thinking" na yan sa student, edi there must be something wrong with the whole system at kahit ilang days weeks months pa i-extend ang semester, kung hindi yun magbabago, walang matututo (truly). /14
If confident tayo na na-instill na yan sa bawat isko at iska, a mass promotion would not hurt.
I'm sure hindi lang ako ang nakakakita nitong mga gaps na ito sa educ system / job market, this thread is just to provide perspective. Most ng mga bagay, natutunan sa labas ng UP /15
In terms of finance, bilang isang nagstart na magtrabaho at naging breadwinner bigla dahil sa crisis, any decision the admin makes that means "extending" or make-up classes could be our family's tipping point. /16
Yung breaking big problems into smaller ones, trying different iterations of a solution, etc etc /19
