THREAD
I've seen quite a few tweets demanding that antisemitism campaigners call out the antisemitic depiction of Ed Miliband in the cartoon below.
Strangely, those most outraged by the overt antisemitism are people who've spent the past few years denying the existence of antisemitism in the Labour party, to the extent that they call us liars and smear merchants.
And while it's true antisemitism is a societal problem and should be attacked wherever it manifests, I find it hard to get vexed about this depiction of Ed Miliband, for the reason that it isn't antisemitic. Here's why...
IHRA defines antisemitism as a "certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews"
So... antisemitism is a hatred of Jews
Quite often the manifestation of this hatred is in stereotypes and tropes such as the myth of Jewish or Israeli (Jews as collective) power
Recent examples of antisemitic artwork include the Jewish/Israeli facehugger.

Through the dehumanization and the power trope, one can deduce the artist's hatred of Jews.

Clear antisemitism whether the artist is portraying Jews or Israel
Mear One's Freedom for Humanity portrays demonic Jewish characters in a mendacious plot, reminiscent of the Protocols of Zion.

Again, it is quite possible to glean the artist's batshit views on Rothschild Zionists...
In these examples again, the artists' hatred of Jews is apparent and they form the power trope.

It is antisemitism
So let's look at this one of Ed Miliband.
Whilst he's depicted with stereotypical Jewish features and he's eating a bacon sandwich, it has to be noted that Ed Miliband has some stereotypical Jewish features and is famous for his awkward handling of a bacon sandwich...
And whilst it's not a flattering cartoon of Ed, it's a valid likeness and it's hard to read into this cartoon any "perception of Jews which may be expressed as hatred of Jews" at all. And I can't find a single IHRA example it breaches.
There's been many ways of drawing Miliband over the years and the artist drew him younger when he was a young leader. All he's done is aged his previous depiction to bring him up to date.
So to conclude, the cartoon is not antisemitic because it doesn't express a hatred of Jews and doesn't breach any IHRA examples.

Claiming it is antisemitic displays a fundamental misunderstanding of what antisemitism is.
