By popular demand, and in honor of the 2020 #MetGala ( @HFMetGala and @metmuseum) here's a look back at some of the memorable Met Gala red carpet looks. With a biology twist. I spent some time putting this together, so I hope you folks enjoy this! (long thread ahead)
1. Perhaps one of the most iconic looks on the red carpet, Claire Danes lights up the Met Gala in 2016 with her glowing dress by @Zac_Posen. Reminds me a lot of the blue Pixies' Parasol mushroom (Mycena interrupta).
2. Who can forget the time when Rihanna showed up to the 2018 catholicism-themed Met Gala dressed up as the pope. The heavily embellished gown designed by @Margiela reminds me of this greenish white lichen with the small black spots (species unknown).
3. Amber Valletta wore this very bright green and daring @YSL feathered jacket for the 2019 Met Gala. The feathers resemble the branching filaments of Trichophyton rubrum (fungus) on this artificially colored SEM image.
4. Lady Gaga does not shy away from an exaggerated red carpet look and her 2019 @Brandonmaxwell hot pink gown is no different. The ginormous and shapeless gown looks a lot like this wet mount of Amoeba proteus. Just me? No? I hope you see it, too.
5. This one is for my medical lab tech peeps. Cardi B's extravagant rubies encrusted gown by @ThomBrowneNY sorta looks like a giant red blood cell. Maybe it's the combination of the vivid red color and the hollow ring-like shape.
6. In 2019, the Vogue icon & chairwoman of the Gala, Anna Wintour paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld (creative director of @CHANEL) by wearing this timelessly chic pink feathered cape. The pink feathers remind me of the rosey-pink cap of the Waxcap (Hygrocybe calyptriformis)
7. Although Celine Dion had trouble with the 'camp' theme at the 2019 Gala, the outfit was nonetheless an artistic masterpiece. The floor-length draped fringe on Celine's sleeves was made from glass beads & looks a lot like the New Zealand glowworms! See
8. Miley's 2015 @AlexanderWangNY look is young and edgy and was so on-brand for Miley Cyrus. The shiny studs on the black dress look like Legionella pneumophila colonies on buffered charcoal yeast extract (BCYE) agar. Punk glamour X microbes mood board?
9. Did someone say parasites & fashion don't mix? Well, for this one you'll have to use your imagination a little. The beautiful magenta/purple embellishments on Alison Brie's gown by @prabalgurung looks like the bradyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii! No, I'm not a crazy cat lady!
10. For my ornithologist friends, I present you Ezra Miller's 2019 @Burberry look getting the downy woodpecker treatment. C'mon, I know you see it, too. The small red patch, the bold stripes, and the white breast patch... just throwing the idea out there!
11. For the 2019 Met Gala, Jourdan Dunn turned into a rose .. or maybe it's a pink oyster mushroom (Pleurotus djamor)! Like Zac Posen once said “You cannot beat Mother Nature. You can just homage.” Maybe the inspiration was a mushroom after all!
12. Kendall Jenner came to turn heads in this massive orange feathered @versace dress. The feathers look a lot like the tubular basidiocarps of the coral fungus Clavaria fragilis! How cool would it be to make a dress out of mushrooms!
13. For this one, you might have to close one eye and look at the overall shape of the dress. For the 2017 Met Gala, Lena Denham wore a burgundy one-shoulder gown which kinda reminds of the red algae Porphyra (ping @kirstenmmuller)
14. In the highly memorable and jaw-dropping red carpet look, Jared Leno wore a crystal-encrusted @gucci gown that looks a lot like Klebsiella pneumoniae colonies on blood agar. This outfit gave me the chills (cough, cough.. see what I did there *wink*)
Shoutout to @AnneAMadden, @theo_llewellyn, @ReaderMeter, and @mikamckinnon who've done similar threads in the past. It's fun to see other scientists' take on fashion X science and nature.
