1/3 I remember doing a story in NZ on the lack of diversity in media, and reached out to a Maori journalist to ask if she would come on a panel to talk about it. She told me off for not having an existing circle of Maori friends & contacts, and that she wouldnt be a rent a maori
2/3 ‘talking head’ for my panel. At the time I was a little taken aback. I’m ashamed to say it’s only now, watching the NZ coverage of the March 15 attacks and court case that I understand what she meant. You cannot dip into an entire society, culture, minority for a one time..
3/3 only appearance and expect to truly gain any sort of deep understanding. Instead, engage always. Make friends. Go to Eid dinners. Maybe experience fasting during Ramadan. Learn what it means to be Muslim. Don’t rent a Muslim for 30 second grab and pretend like you’re engaged.
