After a few weeks with New Horizons, I'm realising why it's not quite gelling as well for me as New Leaf and Wild World. And it's going to make me sound like a twat.
But, I feel like Animal Crossing has previously had something of a melancholic vibe. They're all about starting anew in an unfamiliar place you don't belong. You are leaving something behind, and the games usually play that up heavily in the beginning.
You get letters from "Mom", you feel out of place with the villagers, you learn where all the establishments are. Even the music has a tinge of melancholy to it.
But New Horizons is much more peppy and upbeat. Everyone's always happy and excited, you're creating your own perfect island bit by bit, you have control of everything. There's not even a sense of having left something behind - i.e. no Mom letters.
A good example is that in the old games, KK was generally a vagabond that just sat alone on a box or in an empty basement playing tunes because he liked it.
In New Horizons, he's a celebrity whose concert is a massive deal for your island.

And I'm not saying this is bad - on the contrary, I dig that they took the series in a new direction and let you have this hands-on approach to creating a new placerather than assimilating to an existing one.
Buuuut I do feel like I personally enjoy the older approach slightly better. And this thread is basically just me parsing why that is.
New Horizons is still a fun game with most of the stuff I love about AC.
I just kinda wish it was more depressing and made you feel sad.
