1/Usually this time of year, I, like many historians of the revolutionary period (1916-23) would be giving public talks-mine focus on the activities and experiences of the revolutionary women. Because of #Covid-19 thatâs not to be, so instead I thought Iâd bring you #irishwmnhist
a day by day account of 1916 through the eyes of one of its participants - Margaret Skinnider. She was a Scottish born member of Cumann na mBan, an associate of Markievicz, Connolly & other 1916 leaders. She was also a crack shot with a rifle & dressed as a Fianna boy in training
3/ She fought the Rising as a member of the Irish Citizen Army, stationed in @RCSI_Irl under the command of Michael Mallin & Countess Markievicz. She wrote her account of the week âDoing my bit for Irelandâ in 1917- while on the Irish Republican Womenâs propaganda tour in America
4/ I will be putting up daily excepts from âDoing My Bit for Irelandâ during this week under the #doingmybit1916 If you want to know more about this extraordinary woman can read all about the life and times of Margaret Skinnider in my recently published biography from @ucdpress
