I just read something that really got me thinking about TIger King and how media normalizes negative aspects of our culture. It sure was entertaining, but Carol was harassed terribly and I think her representation in the show speaks to the normalization of misogyny in media
I think a common theme of the series was that all kinds of people can do bad things, and that’s true. But I think a lot of framing of the show’s narrative further demonized Carol while making Joe seem much more forgivable
It’s not to say that she may not have done wrong (or killed her husband), but in a way, the show sort of normalized the years of harassment she went through from Joe as justified and as people watch the show, it’s easy for us to just hop on that same train of harassment
And from much of what I’ve seen, public discourse on Joe/Doc V.S. Carol seems to look very different and I think that’s just an example of how “normal people” can take in and regurgitate misogyn without even realizing it. I know I did.
I’m not sure what the whole point of this is, but I wasn’t gonna be able to sleep I till I shared these thoughts so here you go. TL;DR: don’t forget to challenge what you watch and how you think. Your mind is more of a mirror then you may realize.
