anime recommendation thread bc i'm bored in quarantine
I tried to include lesser-known series so there's a better chance of this thread being more useful to ppl who've seen a lot of shit
1. March Comes in Like a Lion
This is a slice of life, coming of age story that's sort of about shogi, but also kinda not. It has strong emotional beats and fantastic characterization. Rei's development is not only organic but heartwarming to watch.
2. Great Teacher Onizuka
A crude comedy/slice of life. Whether or not you'll enjoy this depends on your sense of humour. Even so, the show has a strong moral message and a real heart as to how that message is being conveyed. It'll make you laugh and it might even make you cry.
3. The Tatami Galaxy
A coming of age story. The show is repetitive, but purposefully so as it leads to a fantastic finale. The themes are relevant to people in their youth trying to make the most of the changes in their lives. You'll either find this pretentious or profound.
4. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
A drama centered around rakugo and the relationships between characters trying to keep the art form alive. It has well fleshed out characters paired with a well-integrated setting. The various dynamics between characters are the main selling point
5. Mushishi
The rare type of show where neither the plot or the characters are the focus. The world itself along with the unique atmosphere it presents are the main draws of the show. The plot tends to be formulaic, yet that does not get in the way of the tranquil atmosphere
6. Toradora!
I'm well aware this show is far from obscure, but along with OHSHC it's my favourite rom-com. The show tends to fall into cliche's of the rom-com genre, but that does not prevent it from having strong emotional beats and an incredible dynamic between the leads.
7. A Place Further than the Universe
4 girls who set out to do something incredible with their lives. Although not the most realistic show, watching them overcome the many challenges they face to achieve their goals is endearing. Inspiring message paired with great animation
8. Beck
A coming of age story that's also about a band. The subplot is a little ridiculous, but if you can suspend your disbelief you will enjoy the otherwise grounded character interactions and development. As a music anime, the ost absolutely slaps.
9. Glass Mask
Despite being from the 70's, a lot of this show holds up today. An anime about acting where the characters are quite realistic and their interactions are interesting. It suffers from an awful romantic subplot, but if you're able to overlook this you'll enjoy
10. Katanagatari
A very wordy story about swords. The dialogue between the leads is witty and well thought out. They are able to bounce off each other incredibly well. Like the art style, the show is very unique and I've never watched anything like this before.
