Love the sentiment of "not seeing race." However, I& #39;ve:
- Been told "it& #39;s you" when I spoke up about racism, homophobia, bigotry in our program.
- Been called the name of the only other African-American male in our program by attendings.

- Been told years after I started speaking up in our program that people had been wrong and they& #39;d messed up (not realizing that I still had to live with their previous actions)
- Had to report attendings for behavior and never heard an apology from those attendings.

- Told I& #39;m unprofessional for the hair, not wearing a tie, etc, and had to remind attendings that people are dying on the streets, shouldn& #39;t we focus on other things?
- Heard about attendings I& #39;d never met have secret meetings about my clothes/hair/tie.

- Been told I wasn& #39;t receptive to feedback after becoming suicidal from working with an attending where I tried to speak up about her practices. Those who said that would apologize years later for how they handled everything.
But, my absolute favorite instance?

- After helping my class (and all of us agreeing on a course of action) and handling some issues after a pretty shocking event in our residency, I was later told by our head Program Director that what I had done was unprofessional.
- Oh, in front of our whole residency.

Said PD would apologize to our class (half-assedly) by email. I never received an apology. He never said he was wrong or told the other classes he had said those words in front of that I actually hadn& #39;t done anything unprofessional.

All of that and more are why I& #39;m leaving my program. Even with all the changes we& #39;ve made, it& #39;s still not safe for minorities.
So:
If those doctors treat colleagues that way, I& #39;m pretty sure they see race and wonder how it plays into their patient care.
Spoiler: not well.

Thus, if you "don& #39;t see race" you& #39;re missing huge issues.
Again, I love the sentiment, but it& #39;s just not based in reality.
One day, hopefully it will be, though
