FOOD RESOURCES
For COVID-19
Very NOLA Centric
Some applicable to GNO and Louisiana. Later info on growing your own can be used by others.
This is a very long thread.
It will be done in (hopefully) logical sections.
Starting with some general resources, retweets & SNAP info
Please, check this resource first. It has the most up to date links and information. If you live in #NOLA you should check it regularly

Personal communication with SNAP/DCFS/EBT
DCFS which runs SNAP in Louisiana is over capacity with applications right now.
It may take 30 days or more  to process an application just for approval.
It is best to submit your documents when you submit your application. If you are doing this via the Cafe website you may have issues doing so. If that is the case you should submit your application without the documentation and let them contact by email for them.
When they do ask for them by email you can respond to the email with the documents.
A separation notice from your employer or contact information for your employer.

Proof of separation (last day work or date of last paycheck)

Proof of income (for example, a pay stub)
Proof of identity (for example, a copy of your Driver's License)
Proof of residency (for example, a copy of your La. driver's license, utility bill, or rental receipt)
If you don't have all of them just submit what you do have. Let them know you do not have everything. If your ID is expired just send the photo of it anyway.
They are currently not doing interviews even by phone. They review your application, ask for documentation, review documentation and then approve or deny.
There's A LOT more to come.
The next section will include downloadable and printable docs, spreadsheets, calendars, and pdfs.
Many of these are essentially databases of programs and schedules. Some more regularly updated than others.
That will be followed by larger websites listing food (and other) resources. Then I will listing a number of FB groups that might be helpful (many about growing food etc) followed by YouTube videos on growing vegetables. It does not end there. There will be more info after that.

Assistance:

"The GNO caring collective is offering help to those who need to access to local food banks, but don’t want to put themselves at ri They have volunteers to take your phone calls, as well as to go and get the food that you need."
To Get Assistance from GNO Caring Collective:

"They are in desperate need of volunteers for both taking calls and to do deliveries. So expect some delays if you’re in need of help."
Volunteer:

Hi!  Julie here with GNO Caring Collective.  We are looking for more volunteers.
We have neighborhood coordinators for each neighborhood in the GNO, but we don't have enough drivers willing to deliver school lunches and do our weekly Second Harvest food box donation delivery every Wednesday.
If you are someone who can commit to volunteering your time a couple of times or even once a week we could really use you.  Right now we are serving 300 community members who need help, and the volunteers that we do have are stretched pretty thin.
DISABILITY UNDERGROUND

NEW ORLEANS MUTUAL AID SOCIETY

New Orleans Mutual Aid Society Food & Grocery Delivery
For residents over 60yrs old and/or residents who are immunocompromised and in need of COVID19 support, the New Orleans Mutual Aid Society is offering free daily food delivery and biweekly grocery delivery!
NOMAS Seeks AssistanceđŸ˜·

Greetings from the New Orleans Mutual Aid Society!  We are ecstatic to report that our daily meal delivery and twice-weekly grocery dispatch has provided over two hundred meals for homebound seniors and other vulnerable neighbors -- just this week!
However, we know that the present crisis is still escalating, and we continue to receive many requests for help.  That's why we hope you'll consider supporting us in one or more of the following ways this week!
1.) Can you donate?  Your cash donation goes directly to buying groceries sufficient to serve twenty households a week.  A donation of $20 will buy groceries for a family of four for three days! Can you make a donation today?  If so, please donate via Venmo to @Sarah-Pritchard-11
2.) Can you drive?  We need volunteers to pick up meals and deliver them to the homes of recipients.  We are particularly seeking drivers who can commit to one or more standing shifts a week.
If this is you, please write back or call at 510-535-4652 to let us know which day (or days) this week you'd like to sign up for.  If you are willing to take one or more regular weekly shifts, that would be super-helpful -- please let us know!
3.) Can you spread the word?  NOMAS runs on volunteer labor and, as things get more intense locally, we're going to need more help!  Can you take a moment today to share information about what we're doing, and why you're a part of it?
Please let us know if you have any questions, and thank you!

With best wishes -- David Brazil (for the New Orleans Mutual Aid Society)

"Those who want to volunteer can choose to do things to assist such as deliver groceries, medication, or even donate in any capacity."
"All deliveries and donations are intended to be made without contact and are to be left on the front step of the delivery location to ensure the safety of all of our participants."
"Please go check out http://www.covaid.co  for more information and to sign up to help with deliveries, or share with someone you may know who needs assistance!"

Just an FYI. You can buy vegetable seeds with SNAP. I don't know about starts or seedlings, but seeds are okay👍
