Decided to put my thoughts in a manner that made sense on the topic. Playing games in Arizona could cause an offensive environment that would be really interesting to watch. I don’t know if it’s been brought up but I live in a desert area so I can share my thoughts and experience
First the desert air makes the balls fly further and since all spring training facilities are outside there’s no cover from the sun and the dry air. Dry air, or air with low humidity, is known to allow baseballs fly further which could lead to more HRs which is fun.
Second the sun dries out the playing surface, which can cause a whole bunch of interesting scenarios. The grass would be dry so the ball would come at the fielder faster, causing errors in the beginning, and could also lead to more infield hits.
Fielders positioning would be impacted and you might see infielders move to different spots than they normally would to allow them to field the ball more comfortably. This doesn’t even take into account basic shifts, so defense could look totally different.
In theory you would have guys play further back because you have the balls coming at them quicker so that would give them the requisite time and allow them to be “on schedule.” And shifts might look massively different as a result, daily reminder ban the shift people suck.
If fielders are further back that could mean its more advantageous(I know multi syllable words) for the more athletic guys. Putting even more emphasis on rangy athletes in the infield which is what teams should be doing anyways but I digress.
This could be amplified if any spring training is turf, which I don’t believe any are but just in case I wanted that to be covered, also turf baseball fields outside are truly awful for players.
Now I wonder if it’s being brought up but maybe watering the field more often during the game might help but that’s speculation because I doubt they would willingly come out in between innings and water the field, even though they should
Because I can’t stress enough summertime in a desert like Arizona is truly awful, players will be playing day games that can get as high as 120 degrees and often top 110 degrees.
