My kids went to a very alpha Church of England Primary School. Every year there was an Easter hat parade.
The kids were meant to make their own hats but inevitably competitive parenting took over and the parents* spent weeks beforehand visiting websites like this
*(I'll leave you to guess the gender of those upon whom this labour fell. Suffice to say, Daddy was usually Something in the City).
Or in more extreme cases this
And confecting masterpieces like this...
...for their little darlings (aged 4-11) to wear while walking round a small square of tarmac, the younger ones often crying and occasionally wetting themselves.
Anyway, we had three kids at the school and I had a job. Which wasn't in millinery. We did get the kids to make their own hats but it was still a shedload of Easter hassle. Sourcing hat materials, cute chicks, craft glue etc and then getting the snivelling brats** to make them.
**They were about as keen on the whole thing as I was.
At long last we got to the final, final Easter hat parade. The youngest was in year 6 and about to graduate to secondary school.
My patience with the whole thing was long spent. I said, "get your sister @angelikate_ to make you a hat, I've had enough!"
And so she did.
And it was the best Easter hat ever!
Happy Easter!
