(1 of 5) Went for drive to take in some fresh smogless LA air and escape my home for a bit. Sitting at stoplight a black SUV with windows vibrating from all the bass pulls up. Guy driving looks like Busta Rhymes, bobbing up and down to some hip hop song and smoking a blunt...
(2 of 5) Light changes and we drive side by side to next light. When we stop he lowers his radio and waves until I look over. "Yo, what's that song?"
Surprised he can even hear it, I reply "Gerry Rafferty, Right Down the Line. The Bridge on Sirius."
(3 of 5) He fiddles with radio until he finds station, listens to Gerry's dreamy guitar, reacts like a deaf person using a hearing aid for the first time. "Damn, that shit's tight." He cranks it up and we drive side by side to next light, a mini-Gerry Rafferty parade.
(4 of 5) We stop at next light. He takes a huge hit from joint and smiles at me. "Yo man this shit's goin' on my next album." He gives me a nod, like Mr Miagi to Daniel Laruso at the end of Karate Kid - and turns left, his SUV windows now vibrating from Gerry Rafferty.
(5 of 5) So if we somehow escape this pandemic and humanity adopts as its anthem a hip hop song using Gerry Rafferty's 'Right Down the Line' as a sample track ...you're welcome
FYI, @TheBonnieRaitt does a beautiful cover of Right Down the Line.
