Been rewatching Community on Netflix and it’s a great take-your-mind-off-of-things option right now. Also reminded of getting to visit the set circa S3 and how much of a surreal, awesome experience that was.
While Community was a network show it wasn’t supported by the network so there was no real PR budget. I made it known I was a fan and when I was in LA for something else I ended up swinging by and got to interview the entire cast and watch the Russos direct.
As weird as it is to visit any movie or TV show set it’s doubly so when it’s already something established. Walking into Greendale’s library was like stepping into the screen. I didn’t see Alison Brie hanging out between takes, I saw Annie Edison.
The whole trip was memorable but three things stick out to me now, nearly 10 years later. One is that @joelmchale kept thanking me profusely for giving coverage to the show because the network didn’t want to spend the money to publicize it.
Second was Gillian Jacobs revealing she was a big foodie and grilling me about all the emerging food trucks in the Austin scene. (Not gonna lie, I walked away from that visit with a sizable crush)
And lastly, getting to meet Chevy Chase. I was interviewing Donald Glover (who spent all his downtime on set off by himself with his headphones on, writing lyrics) and Chevy walked up with the publicist, interrupting us.
I introduce myself and Chevy extends his hand and says, “Hi! I’m Shepherd’s vagina.” Without missing a beat Glover said. “You look different than I thought you would...”
Anyway, day, week, month made. Perfect way to meet Chevy Chase. Everybody was rad and it’ll be a memory I’ll always hold dear. Rewatching the show has brought all it back up.
