A clue to the current governments problems lies in the fact Johnson re-hired the team that ran his GE campaign to sort out his comms problems.

They've treated a public information campaign like a GE campaign.

This is a category error and a colossal mistake.

Supporting newspapers have been focussed on getting Johnson re-elected when the citizens with whom care he's been lumbered with are dying left, right and centre.

PPE is under supplied, Nightingale is sucking up resources, the byzantine (and Tory design) NHS structures wilts

Yet we're treated nightly to an "elect Boris style" broadcast as a substitute for democracy, and his return from illness lauded as an electoral victory against death

The whole thing is so twisted and improbable and mad that Waugh would have been hard put to satirize.

Even now my mind revolts at my own analysis.

The government has acted so monstrously it has broken all civilised norms. It is pressing the deaths of loved ones and friends into the service of Johnsons popularity.

It should be punished.

But wont be. While parliament is suspended, the opposition cannot bring any sense of a competing narrative to this madness.

The governments popularity continues to climb almost in lockstep with the rising cv19 body count.

We are alive in the most monstrous of times.

P.S my analysis accounts for the improbably odd behaviour of the newspapers.

The usual suspects have been pressed into supporting the Governments campaign.

This ignores and underplays Johnsons problems, as in a GE.

The end result is that there appears to be a conspiracy to hide the governments problems.

This government is too dumb for that.

The GE whizz kids broke the usual GE rules of hiding the worst suspects and used a cattle prod to push the incompetent Patel stage centre.

I suspect the problem lies in the dark binary star of Gove and Raab, with Cummings unable to contribute his usual rat like cunning to the ongoing clusterfuck.
