By the way, they're all asleep now (because timezone difference) but mad props to all @revision_party organizers, they are absolutely killing it!
Organizing demoparties, getting compos set up, actually recording and playing back that shit, keeping the servers running, troubleshooting anything and everything are all massively collaborative activities behind the scenes, and take tons of specialized equipment and expertise.
They're all doing this right now, everyone from home, no more than 2 people to a room, using a completely improvised recording setup and tech stack that they had to come up with in a few weeks, and against all reason, they got it all under control.
You guys might think this is basically a regular Twitch streaming setup but it's not, I spent a few hours today hanging out (online of course) with a few of the compo organizers and YOU HAVE NO IDEA
For example, the PC compos are being prepared by two people who can only communicate via the Internet, and who then prepare a playlist and written instructions to a third person (hiya @kebby!) who's spending the entire weekend sequestered in his regular work office...
where they happen to have lots of high-end video capture equipment (they do a lot of video stuff). @kebby then gets the written instructions and records everything and uses his workplace's fast internet to upload the videos to a server from which the actual stream is run.
The Partymeister etc. setup that does the beamslides is administered from Germany and actually runs on a server in Finland if I understood that right? And that's where the stream comes from.
So, what you would ordinarily think is some OBS streaming setup from one PC actually involves Chaos in Hamburg doing compo prep, Las (don't know where he is) also doing compo prep, KB at a different site in Hamburg recording videos and sending them to Finland,
DFox in Saarbrücken administering a Partymeister installation that serves the main streaming server in Finland, and everything from there going out to Twitch.
This is full bonkers. It makes no sense that this works at all, and certainly not that it works this well. It's INCREDIBLE. Mad props to everyone.
And a) this is just the PC compos, other platforms are trickier, and b) I'm sure I butchered that explanation or forgot somebody, in which case I'm sorry and please correct me, I'll update this thread!
