So, today @speaksangie tweeted out a less than stellar criticism of white male socialization. The criticism of her is her use of AMAB as opposed to "Male Socialization", and it has been dragged out too far now. However, I'm seeing trans
people now taking umbrage with the concept of them having male socialization to begin with. The criticism they're levying now is that TERFs like to say that trans women aren't women because they're more aggressive than women. The issue
here is that TERFs are being bioessentialists when they say this; to them it is not a choice, men are born more aggressive than women. This is sexism 101. But what Angie is talking about isn't biology, but sociology. The idea of male,
the socialization that comes with that social construct, are not inherent to your sex, but rather learned behaviors born of a social upbringing within patriarchal society. You can unlearn these behaviors, and many cis men do, as do many
AMAB trans people. Angie was not calling out "all trans girls" as having something essential to their being as a result of being AMAB, but a social affect that exists in anyone socialized male in our white christian patriarchal culture.
This affect isn't something she's saying is inherent to us that we can't rid ourselves of, but something we need to look out for, so that we can take the time to unpack that male socialization and decide what we need to get rid of.
