Watching Pacific Rim and am really broken by how optimistic of a film this is
The ONLY change I’d make to this movie is swapping the order we’re exposed to Raleigh and Mako’s origins
Mako as a child being saved by a shining knight is such a compelling opening and by starting with that you reinforce that this is a two-hander, not Raleigh’s film with Mako as a second lead
And learning that Raleigh was broken by having the link to his brother severed only after we actually understand the drift would heighten the drama of that moment
Oh man, I forgot this opens in 2020
If only this movie had a sequel
Not only is this a lovely grace note that provides rhythm to the major fight scene on the film, it’s also a nod to Toho kaiju effects as it’s the only miniature model work in the movie, and it ends on a visual metaphor for the film’s thesis of connectivity as strength
I remember seeing this in the theater and when the kaiju fetus strangled itself on its own umbilical cord thinking “Del Toro definitely wrote this part” and sure enough, that’s apparently based on the story of his own birth
Real talk: Especially now, “We are cancelling the apocalypse” is a powerful sentiment that we should buy into
Like this is a film about how empathy and bridging divides is the one thing that’s going to save us from global catastrophe
This movie is 7 years old and I can’t think of a big movie with more consistently great effects that’s come out since then
Advantages of a director who is actually tuned into the effects. Dude even supervised the 3D conversion to make sure the Jaegers and Kaiju didn’t lose scale
Also, holy crap this is the most hummable theme
Man, I don’t get people who always want del Toro to make adaptations. Blade II rules of course, but he wouldn’t have made Pacific Rim if he made The Hobbit, and I wouldnt trade Shape of Water or Crimson Peak for 100 Justice League Darks
I can’t believe how many bad decisions went into Pacific Rim Uprising
