I’m both very excited and very tired to report on my Lab’s latest publication regarding differences in perceptions of parental authority legitimacy between first- and second-born adolescents. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2020-24796-001
I wish this thread was about the work itself (which I really am proud of!!), but it is more a tale of perseverance in the academy.
This manuscript was first written 5 years ago (FIVE!!), in response to a special issue. It was not accepted there, but received positive reviews, so we pushed ahead.
The 2nd journal was where it was eventually published (this week)...after 5 rounds of review + a commentary + our response to the commentary. I have many grey hairs specific to this manuscript.
I should note that everyone involved in this process still likes and respects one another. But, more importantly, I hope that this series of manuscripts brings attention to the lack of research on parenting multiple children.
Parenting siblings is different from parenting one child and we need to recognize that 80% of North American kids grow up with siblings, so our research on single parent-child relationships is severely limited.
Also...developmental research should not take 5 years to publish. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
