If we are headed toward 40-50 million unemployed, tens of millions of whom will lose their health insurance, most of whom have few or no savings, we are about to have a social crisis the likes of which none of us have ever seen. Without a rent holiday, we will need tent cities.
Without massive debt forgiveness, we shall see a generation crushed beneath a burden accumulated in this year alone. Without a change in our health care system, we will see many die needlessly--either from this disease or want of health care.
This catastrophe is just starting. By summer, it could make the Great Depression (when the unemployment rate was much lower) look modest by comparison. This is not about "opening up" our economy, we can't safely do that. This is about coming to grips with our broken social con
