1. I am seeing prominent folks on the left saying Trump wants to shutdown the @usps because he wants to stop vote by mail. Folks, you are doing the equivalent of saying 2+2=22. You are connecting actions that have no nexus.
2. First, Trump can't stop vote by mail. It is a state decision. It has been going on for decades and has been growing. The military votes by mail. Millions of Americans do. Recently, GOP govs in Ohio, New Hampshire, etc. have moved to expand it.
3. But wait, you say---he can stop vote by mail by killing @usps.
4. Consider: If the USPS stopped operations, there would be an economic calamity. State and local governments, businesses large (Amazon, FedEx, etc.) and small (online used book sellers, etc.) all would suffer. Big time.
5. Rural areas, which have a lot of Trump voters and GOP reps and senators in Congress, are esp. reliant on the @USPS. They would be hit hard.
6. Congress easily can drop additional loans or funding into the next big COVID funding bill. Or it can do it through an emergency appropriation.
7. And the electoral costs of not signing would be immense for the President and the GOP. So, again, he'll sign it. Nevermind him saying he rejects a bailout. That's just negotiating rhetoric. The man talks tough but doesn't veto spending bills. https://www.senate.gov/legislative/vetoes/TrumpDJ.htm
8. Indeed, in the last latest COVIC law his admin agreed to giving @USPS an additional $10 billion in borrowing authority.
9. So, rest assured---whatever you think of the man, he has no incentive to kill the @USPS. In fact, his incentives are to keep it up and running.
10. BTW---Trump's postal reform commission rejected privatization and deemed USPS an essential govt service. He has never disagreed with any of that, or claimed @usps should be abolished. The man himself votes by mail!
12. Last thing: millions of Americans get prescriptions by mail. If USPS stops operations, those Americans suffer and die. And all of us who love them also would suffer and rage. Do you think a president obsessed with his ratings and reelection would want that?
