When Scorsese goes it’s going to be as if an abyss has opened up in the culture. In addition to the great movies he’s made, his legacy as a film educator and preserver (often spending his own $) is incalculable. I know a lot of people don’t care. I do. I think about it a lot.
I realize he antagonized MCU fans last year, but he made a lot of excellent points that were never honestly grappled with. And even if you reject his arguments, I don’t see how you can fail to appreciate what he’s contributed. All the careers he’s enabled.
Akira Kurosawa. Spike Lee. Charles Burnett. Allison Anders. Francesca Archibugi. Andrew Lau. Amelie van Elmbt. The Safdie brothers. Kenneth Lonergan. Joanna Hogg. Martha Pinson. These and countless other directors, he has produced and in some cases directly hired.
I can’t take people seriously in any other area if they crap on Scorsese. It’s like failing to appreciate Wynton Marsalis or Leonard Bernstein or Joan Didion or some other artist who is valuable not just for the work itself but for their personal impact on the larger culture.
No particular reason for the preceding thread except that I’m feeling sentimental about this man.
I mean, seriously: you might as well say that you hate sunlight or the ocean.
