I have actually thought about not bullying western born and raised disapora kids ! I have seriously considered it. but you are all so annoying god bless

ok this tweet is now big enough that it’s lost it’s original meaning (half joke-half critique), and most of the interactions are now from diaspora people retweeting as a self drag or replying saying they feel attacked

It’s really interesting to see the diaspora interact with any critique like this because it usually ranges from “this is my dissertation topic haha” to “omg I feel attacked!” to “fuck you for being privileged enough to have a homeland!”

I think its funny that for most diaspora people being called out for romanticization validates this idea they have of themselves as corny individuals yearning for the nurturing touch of the motherland, as if there isnt something very wrong w/ adopting that as ur entire aesthetic

the diaspora is usually incapable of separating the real physical homeland from the nostalgia and longing associated with it for someone raised in the west, and therefore incapable of realizing the realities of life in their home countries

what u get is a western born & raised diaspora kid who makes a career out of writing poetry abt the smell of saffron while getting to ignore an economic crisis going on in their home country...

...while simultaneously drowning out local voices in global discussions by being automatically seen as an authority despite (and sometimes even because of) their western upbringing

also I think my tweet can be interpreted in a way where I’m also included in the group of people I’m calling out, which is valid since living away from home now makes me susceptible to similar feelings of nostalgia

but I think this is why the tweet is being interpreted by diaspora ppl as “haha we all do this very dumb thing as a community but its okay bcs we’re self aware” & not “most artistic/academic conversations of diaspora r vapid & pointless & dont actually engage with any real thing”
