It is time for a Twitter thread on how to help autistic people during #lockdownuk. Please like, share and retweet this thread (I will keep adding to it everyday). #ActuallyAutistic
First tip - Please ensure that the day is structured. A timetable will help for this. Stick to a certain routine. If there is no routine or timetable, the #autistic person will feel overwhelmed and confused. Structure and routine is absolutely necessary. #ActuallyAutistic
Second tip - Ensure that you keep routine during #lockdownuk as similar to normal routine as possible. For example, if it helps an #autistic child, let them wear school uniform at home (during school days) so that this routine will not be broken. #ActuallyAutistic
Third tip (Productivity) - Ensure that the day is as productive as possible. From my experience, I feel more satisfied when I get things done than to have nothing to do. Please give #autistic people some "autism-friendly" activities to do but don't overwhelm them with too much.
To expand on my third tip, autism-friendly activities include:
* Cooking
* Gardening
* Art and Craft
and any others that you can think of.
However, there are some activities which some autistic people may not be comfortable with like:
* Watching a movie (movies can be too loud and can use bright lights which feels overwhelming)
* Video calls/phone calls (some autistic people are not comfortable with these)
Please ensure that you keep the house calm and peaceful so that #autistic people won't feel overwhelmed with too much noise.
