One thing I don’t currently understand: the media’s complete subservience + capitulation to power. A thread

It made sense when they were attacking J Corbyn + Labour. The vision + plans they had for the country were a threat to the 1%, to the status quo + to media moguls. 1/7

But now? It makes no sense. There’s no immediate threat to Johnson or the Conservative government. They’re in power, with a strong mandate, for at LEAST the next 4 years. Labour has been busy w/ a leadership election + cabinet reshuffle. The opposition isn’t on top form yet. 2/7

The lack of real scrutiny from our media re Covid-19 is concerning. At the daily briefing they ask 1 or 2 Q’s (often quite vague, sometimes leading) then we hear a scripted response, + that’s it. No follow up. No rebuttal. Even in the US we are seeing journos challenge Trump. 3/7

We need to remember that this is not how it’s always been, it’s a relatively new phenomenon.

Watching the government closely - highlighting their failures as well as their successes + making sure the public were well informed every step of the way - used to be the norm. 4/7

In the papers, on TV, on radio. Journalists would doorstep prominent politicians to get answers. Even via unconventional channels: Spitting Image, Have I Got News For You.

Wilson, Heath, Thatcher, Blair et al. They were scrutinised. They were challenged. They were critiqued. 5/7

The most worrying part is how the majority of people are just accepting it now. Not just accepting it, but defending it. It’s become frowned upon to Q the government, to scrutinise their actions. We’re seeing people attacked, piled-on + doxxed, if they dare criticise the PM. 6/7

This isn’t normal + we can’t let it become normal. Every day we hero-worship ppl who are making (well documented!) bad decisions + every week we lack real scrutiny/opposition, we are allowing ourselves to slip closer towards a totalitarian regime. It’s real + it’s terrifying. 7/7
