It is my turn in the Gannett furlough barrel next week. It sucks but everyone in the world is going through tough times. Despite corporate decisions and in the face of a pandemic and an unprecedented election, the work of the @journalsentinel over the last month has been stellar.
I've been at the paper since 2005. I've been hired, laid off, and rehired. My job status has been part-time, full-time, and temporary. I've been a copy editor, wire editor, page designer and beat writer. I've been through too many corporate mergers to remember them all.
I've been furloughed before, taken pay cuts, gotten raises, @jeff_maillet once paid me for some work with cases of beer. I've seen way too many friends lose their jobs or give up on the business. But something about that newsprint just gets in your blood.
