70 years after one of the most serious Nazi massacres in Italy, a case against a suspected war criminal is closed in Hamburg. The man is permanently unable to negotiate. It should have been a spectacular process. https://twitter.com/Xy5Z89/status/1249051624179470337
The Hamburg General Prosecutor's Office has closed an investigation against a suspected Nazi war criminal. The man is said to have been involved in a massacre in Tuscany in 1944.
The accused was demented and permanently unable to negotiate, the prosecutor said. The now 93-year-old is said to have been involved in the killing of several hundred civilians in the Italian town of Sant 'Anna di Stazzema in the province of Lucca on August 12, 1944.
The evaluation of the file material had led to the result that the accused - if he had been negotiable - would have a high probability "in 342 cases of cruel and low-motivated murder," the prosecutor said.
Italian commentators had already spoken of a "symbolic rather than strictly legal process". In March 2013, Joachim Gauck became the first Federal President to commemorate the massacre together with the Italian head of state Giorgio Napolitano. Reconciliation was a gift,
Gauck said at the time. It is important that the facts are mentioned and that reconciliation can then be made. On August 12, 1944, around 400 members of the 16th S'S Panzer Grenadier Division had retreated to the partisan village of Sant 'Anna di Stazzema in Tuscany.
The residents assumed that a police operation was on the lookout for men of military age. Most men therefore fled to the forests. Mostly women, children and the elderly were left behind. The members of the S'S caused a bloodbath. About 560 civilians were killed.
They were shot with submachine guns or murdered with hand grenades, flamethrowers and stabbing weapons. Many women and more than 100 children were among the dead. "It was killed everywhere, in the houses, in the stables, even in the church square," reported an eyewitness.
The soldiers later poured petrol over the bodies and burned them.
