Had a chat with a family friend who is in her late 60s, a pakka Mangalurean. She told me there was no whiff of hatred between Hindus & Muslims, it all started in 1960, when Jan Sangh spread its wings. And to begin with, conflict pockets in DK were mainly Jan Sangh strong holds.
This corroborates the narratives of my parents who are natives of two different taluks of DK, and have lived experience in two additional taluks.

Key conflict pockets I have hearsay knowledge, are Suratkal & Ullal. Not sure if it was post Jan Sangh or older.
To repeat myself ad nauseam, it is critical to differentiate between hate & prejudice.

Do NOT use experience of prejudices to portray bigotry as natural to society.

Prejudices were much higher between Hindu castes, including between brahmin sub-castes.
Just sharing an old conversation to emphasize the need to focus on "issues."

They find it useful to center Muslims in public discourse, to divert attention away from their failure, in this context migrant crisis, lack of PPEs, testing kits. https://twitter.com/coffeestains11/status/1197559769826877440
