My tio, Jose Rincon-Mora was such a talented artist/architect who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves! Lemme show y’all
the building above on the right is his house/studio in Santo Domingo, and the building on the left is the house he built for his sister and mother. below are some of his pieces which you can also find at https://mamey.co/galeria/jose-rincon-mora-estudio-2/
his story was so tragic. his father (my abuelito) was extremely abusive and he spent most of his childhood fearful for his life. eventually my abuelita left him and he became extremely involved in the church and drew much inspiration from christianity
he traveled between munich and the DR, munich was his safe space where he could be openly queer. Sadly he never came out to his family, and although me and my mom always knew, we never discussed it until after he passed and we spoke to his lifetime partner.
lastly here’s some portraits of my family (the first one is my mom as a baby 🥺) His legacy lives on, and his work is so powerful. One of my biggest inspirations 1939-2016 🕊
His work is super important, and although there is no acknowledgment of his queer identity publicly, it would be doing a disservice to him not to acknowledge the way he has already told his story. A queer afro-latino renaissance man that deserves recognition!! period.
