I’m sorry if this applies to some of my golf twitter friends, but I’m embarrassed by the moaning of those upset their golf courses are closed. It reeks of privilege. This is a time of sacrifice for all. It has nothing to do with how “safe” golf is compared to other pursuits.
I don’t begrudge anyone going to play their course if it’s open and precautions are taken. But if it’s determined that the courses in your area must be closed because all people need less incentive to leave home, then I think you take the hit and be proud of your wee sacrifice.
This isn’t moral superiority talking. And I’m not arguing policy either. I’m not advocating for any courses to be closed, but in some locales, I understand why they are. It’s a small price to pay in places like NYC where people need to literally stay home as much as possible.
As to the economic ramifications: if your main concern is the financial health of the club, and it is closed, it’s not a radical idea for you to donate to them your regular green fee. Many of us helped Brora how we could. Help your course get through this and keep the staff safe.
