I understand people’s reservations about eagerly embracing Joe Biden just because he is the last candidate standing. I hope that, as he’s already done, he will continue to change his policies as key groups of voters and activists apply pressure.
Biden should earn those votes and we should continue to hold him accountable. I am encouraged by the fact that he’s already amended some policies to the left as the race has narrowed. I hope that these are signs that more will come.
I also think we should all be mindful of who, exactly, is being told to “fall in line” for him. That kind of commentary is not going to motivate passionate young people to the polls. Shame won’t work to compel young voters—change does.
At the end of the day, yes, this election should be an indictment of Trump and we should all show up to get him out of office. That doesn’t mean we all stop debating and pointing out Biden’s flaws or weaknesses! On the contrary, we need to address them urgently.
