I want to talk about the difficulty I went through in house job (which many others also did) so people can stop belittling what we do as health workers in a failed system..i won't leave a stone unturned
At the top of my list was the sexual harrassment i faced from seniors (consultant, registrars) it wasn't easy. I still pulled through. I would still go to work and smile for my patients and make them happy. I am sure a lot of people faced this nonsense one way or the other.
During one of my rotations, there was no call room and the patients I was looking after were acutely ill. My room was far from the emergency area. @George_O_E knew this. We would sleep on the ward, on the floor or an empty hospital bed just to monitor these patients.
There is something called 'blood chase', normally porters are to ensure blood is ready for a patient but you see nobody cares, go and get the blood ready. You will go back and forth on a wild goose chase, begging the scientists at the blood bank up and down
There were occasions we were turned into house helps, given duties that weren't part of our job description. I know people that were threatened to go and buy food or they are in trouble. What is that?
There were multiple occasions we would donate our personal money to try to help patients but the relatives will still treat you like shit. We go and beg patients that have for materials to help those that don't have. You will beg for glove, syringes, plaster and the likes.
The worst is that the so called paper you need to write your documentations, you will still beg nurses for it. It is like golden treasure. Sometimes, you would use your money to buy A4 paper just to write. Investigation paper nko, like diamond.
You can't imagine the risk we go through daily just to manage resources that should be readily available in a working environment. A whole department sharing 1 pulse oximeter. Sometimes you have to walk to a different ward to get blood pressure machine to use.
It's CRAZY out there. Don't get it twisted at all. If nobody will talk, me I am talking today. We know what we go through, hence we know what we deserve. Some people will even slap and violate health workers. It is well o..it is really well.
There are too much stories to say and my colleagues understand this and that's why they know they can't stay sane in such a country.
