Exactly. The Trump ad's overt racism obscures - and understandably so - the broader point: Trump has been consistently soft on China, incl w/ coronavirus. If Trump had echoed Biden's approach from Day 1, we and the intl community could be in a better spot. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/04/10/trumps-china-bashing-ad-is-more-ridiculous-than-you-thought/
Just look at what Trump said as recently as mid-January — when his PDB reportedly was filled with ominous warnings about China’s stonewalling over the impending pandemic. He thanked Xi and said he expected to see him IN CHINA soon. https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-signing-u-s-china-phase-one-trade-agreement-2/
This wasn’t a slip of the tongue. Trump the following week was asked specifically about Beijing’s lack of transparency and whether he trusted Xi. His response was unequivocal: “I do.” https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/22/cnbc-transcript-president-donald-trump-sits-down-with-cnbcs-joe-kernen-at-the-world-economic-forum-in-davos-switzerland.html
Two days later, Trump went out of his way to put his credulousness on full display, making it Twitter official. He continued with this tone through the following month, consistently claiming Xi was doing a "good job" responding to the virus. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1220818115354923009?s=20
What was Biden saying during this precise period? Exactly the opposite, insisting on the need for more transparency from Beijing. He was demanding that after warning in late January in a full-blown op-ed of Trump’s unpreparedness to handle the virus. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/01/27/coronavirus-donald-trump-made-us-less-prepared-joe-biden-column/4581710002/
So, yes, one of the two contenders for the presidency has been soft on Beijing when it really matters, jeopardizing America’s preparedness for the impending pandemic.

But, no, it’s not whom the Trump ad would have us believe.
