1/x We're seeing a lot of coverage about African-Americans overindexing in the coronavirus numbers, but one under-addressed cause was revealed in some poll numbers from our recent @NBCLX/ @MorningConsult survey:

Distrust in government. https://twitter.com/noahpransky/status/1245741445274898433
2/x African-Americans were way more likely than any other group to say they would not get a COVID-19 vaccine, once approved by the FDA.

15% of African-Americans said they would not get it at all, w/another 13% saying they'd only get vaccine after most everyone else got it...
3/x African-Americans were the least likely to report getting a flu shot last year.

They were also the most likely to believe the benefits of an approved COVID-19 vaccine will NOT outweigh the possible side effects.
4/x One of the most interesting results - despite all their skepticism about vaccines, African-Americans were more likely than any other group to indicate a vaccine will be more successful in combatting COVID-19 than social distancing is.

Why is this significant?.......
5/x These #'s reveal real skepticism of social distancing among African-Americans.

It's already challenging to get distance in some poor areas, where more people live in small spaces & have poor access to groceries/health care.

Distrust in gov't officials adds to the challenge.
6/6 Hopefully these poll numbers help explain some of the challenges of fighting COVID-19 in the African-American community....and give our leaders tools to close the trust gap.
