(1/4) The rich have tamed one of the four levelers. Whereas past pandemics (Black Plague, Spanish flu) have killed enough low-wage workers and destroyed enough businesses to flatten the wealth gap, this pandemic will do no such thing.
(2/4) Because of the distancing, few workers will die and wages will remain stagnant. Financial assets remain intact, and will rebound, because of central bank and congressional intervention. Thanks to remote work, white collar workers continue to earn their full wage.
(3/4) Blue collar workers, on the other hand, are living on a welfare check and taking on debt to survive. Meanwhile, because all outlets for discretionary spending are shut by government mandate, the white collar wages are going directly to savings.
(4/4) The nation will emerge from this crisis significantly more unequal than before.
