Don’t read this EXTREMELY white perspective on Hawaiian culture (and weird assumption that the movie is set in the 70s). Google “Hawaiian Sovereignty movement.”

Racism in the islands is real. White kids and adults bullied me as a child for not showing the “Aloha spirit!” 🙄 https://twitter.com/squigglydigg/status/1248027995249324032
A lot of white locals mistaken believe they have insight into Hawaiian culture because they grew up on the island and don’t realize or own that they are OCCUPYING the islands. The don’t acknowledge their white privileged and that their fantasy 1950s tourist version of Hawaii is
racist and actively oppression Native Hawaiians, who make up the majority of the homeless, inmates in prison, and survivors of sexual violence.

White locals will always lament the “false us vs them narrative” and wax poetic about the “Aloha spirit” because THEY CAN!
They are living a tropical fantasy on stolen land and they refuse to let go of the notion that they are welcomed and loved by the indigenous people they displace and marginalized by their very presence on the island.

They vilify POC who don’t behave like sweet submissive savages
If you read their post you can spot all the racist subtext. They emphasis on violence experienced by white people but no mention of violence experiences by native Hawaiians. The implication that white kids can be bullies because they’ll get met with violence and
that an orphan six year old girl is a “bitch” and a “brat” for acting rude and ungrateful. This is some classic Karen behavior.

White people like this don’t see the real Hawaii because it means they’d have to see the violence they and their ancestors have don’t to the islands.
There are MANY white people who don't realize that some people of color (especially older generations) are always going to be super polite and accommodating to them because THAT'S HOW WE SURVIVE!

We don't want you to call the cops on us. Or get us evited or get us fired.
