The Nigerian agricultural sector continues to growth and will do so for the next twenty years as our population does , I would try to point out a few areas people can plug in either via direct production or services needed .
I’d start with Rice , current production figures are placed between 5.2-6.3m tonnes , however it’s viewed there still a gap of at least 2m tonnes , opportunities in the local rice include parboiling/polishing/de-stoning and bagging services if you don’t intend to grow crops
Sorghum , a huge ingredient for the breweries and livestock farmers (brewery waste is majorly used to feed cattle/sheep, pigs , poultry and fisheries ) the market is short of over 2m tonnes due to insecurity and climate change
Maize , with production at 11m and it being a major ingredient of livestock feed especially the poultry industry and it’s high consumption as part of the local staple , demand for maize will continue , industry sources place the gap at 9m tonnes and will continue to grow
Wheat , current production is at 60,000 tonnes whilst local demand for related products places consumption at 5m tonnes and to hit 5.4m tonnes in 2021 ( certain coys are already running wheat trials ) don’t complain when there comes restrictions
Soybean , our production figures need to really go up Nigeria has a market demand in excess of 5m tonnes , soybean is a major component of seasoning cubes , an ingredient in animal feed sector valued at over $2B , opportunities exist in milling and oil extraction and export
As our population grows so will be increasing demand for land , here is the opportunity for those who can invest in pasture and silage production to start , there is a ready market to purchase produce , current market valuation is at $1.3B
Opportunities for those not interested in actual production of crops and livestock include processing units , dry units ,cold chain facilities and vehicles , there a lot of communities you can site this and you have year round clients .
Lest I forget , data sources include FAO , USAID, DFID and NBS . Government policies are often done to encourage local production and these agencies have described the current one as “ great “ .
