Today is Holy Saturday, the day when Christ descended into hell to raise up the souls of the virtuous dead. Not a common Renaissance subject, but there are a few nice examples.
Sebastiano del Piombo, 1516. That& #39;s Adam and Eve there in the corner. First ones in, first ones out.

Fra Angelico, 1441. On the bottom right, you can see a demon absolutely flattened by the door Christ just kicked in.
And of course a follower of Hieronymous Bosch, late 16th century. Not quite Renaissance, but too good to pass up.
Here& #39;s the thread from yesterday. And be sure to check back tomorrow, when art goes absolutely crazy. https://twitter.com/JeffreyASachs/status/1248631424024023040?s=20">https://twitter.com/JeffreyAS...
He& #39;s right. Technically, this is Christ& #39;s stopover in Limbo on the way to (or from) his visit to Hell. I had to simplify to squeeze it all into a tweet. https://twitter.com/TheHusayn/status/1248999643213684736?s=20">https://twitter.com/TheHusayn...
