Tough call. Should I pay dues to a union that today pays a fraction of what a New Media spot paid twelve years ago, gave away edits for free that once paid performers, passed ultra low budget option that pays just 20% of scale for same work? No thanks. @sagaftra
I made more $ during my twitch livestream yesterday than minimum SAG day rate for New Media productions with budget up to $250,000.00. And I didn't have to drive to two auditions, wardrobe, and be on set for twelve hours. (Hype Train Level 5 complete)
One commercial spot brought me in for a third callback along with three others. I was put on a treadmill and made to run approx four miles. Then ran on camera. Didn't book it. Paid $0. Cool union.
Once I auditioned for a commercial spot where one actor slaps another three times during the spot. I played the guy getting slapped. My slapper kept screwing up takes. Including rehearsals, I was probably slapped in the face over thirty times. Didn't book it. Paid $0.
Last New Media spot I did, after using the restroom, I found there was no running water. I couldn't wash my hands. Sets are disgusting. It rained all day and nowhere for extras to get out of the elements. They stood in several inches of water for hours. Paid half of 2008 rate.
There's a misconception that actors make lots of $. Celebrities make a lot of money. Most actors live in rented rooms and struggle to pay the bills. I was in a super bowl commercial for a luxury car brand. With all money I made, I could maybe have purchased 5yr old used sedan.
Don't get me wrong: I needed that money and it was a huge part of my year. But it's not like people think. People think a SB commercial buys you a house in the hills, but in reality it just pays for your rented room for a little while longer.
I've been extremely fortunate to get commercials running on TV. But just doesn't seem sustainable. I can't get five commercials on TV every year. And cost of living in LA is a lot. I'm sick of having roommates. Anyway, subscribe to my twitch so I can never pay SAG dues again.
Okay, but I've managed to make a lot of $ over the years from union jobs (humblebrag). So why do i complain so much? Because the writing is on the wall and actors are too stupid, backstabbing, and desperate to actually organize and demand better. It's the same with improvers.
...there are probably only like four other SAG actors who follow this account. Still, brave of me to speak out.
...this thread will self-destruct. This account is for jokes, and while the actors union is a joke, it's not the funny kind. Bye!
